dental veneer Recovery and Post-Procedure Care
At your veneer consult, we will take photos, discuss what you would like to change (shape, shade, etc.) and take pre-op impressions and scans. Your next appointment your teeth will be prepared for the new veneers. Dr. Aliisha prefers very conservative preparation of the teeth. The amount of shaping largely depends on the position and condition of the teeth. Once the “preps” are complete, we will take more photos, shade selections, impressions and scans and then place temporary resin composite veneers. These temporaries are usually worn for a week or two white your final porcelain veneers are being fabricated. The temporaries are not as durable as your final porcelain veneers, nor are they cemented on in the same manner as your final porcelain veneers- so it is important for the patient to be careful while in the temporaries.
While in temporaries avoid:
-biting into hard foods (instead cut the foods into pieces and use your posterior teeth (molars) to chew.
-chewing gum or sticky candies
-chewing ice or other harmful habits like nail-biting or chewing on tooth-picks
-drinking very hot or cold beverages will usually make the teeth more sensitive, as the temporary veneers are not fully bonded onto the teeth as we will be removing them.
During the placement appointment, we remove the temporaries and thoroughly clean your teeth to get an excellent bond. We try on the veneers to ensure proper seal, shape, and shade. We will show you how they appear to ensure your satisfaction. After cementation and careful removal of any residual cement, we take radiographs and photos and review home care. It is common immediately after placement the teeth may feel a little sensitive, but this will resolve.
Veneers are durable and can last for many years, the largest factor of longevity being how well the patient takes care of the restorations and their overall health.
-Be certain to regularly brush and floss your teeth.
-Attend regular six month recall cleaning appointments (more often in the case of periodontal disease.)
-DO NOT use abrasive toothpastes like charcoal.
-DO NOT use your teeth as “tools” to open things, tear of tags, bite your nails, etc.
-For many patients that had veneers placed due to chipping of their natural dentition, we will fabricate a custom night guard to wear to protect your teeth and veneers.
