There are a dizzying variety of toothbrushes on the market, but to help you simplify your selections here are some tips from Dr. Aliisha Choucair.

1) Soft bristles are best. Soft bristles are flexible enough to clean along the curvatures of our teeth with less risk of gum recession. They are effective at breaking up what dentists call “biofilm” — the layer of germs that accumulates plaque and can lead to cavities and gum disease. If you are especially prone to gum recession, extra soft brushes are great too. One of the best manual toothbrushes for people with recession is the nimbus, found here.

2)Technique is the most important factor. Check out this video

3)People with great technique can do a great job with a manual toothbrush. Most of us could use a little help though, so electric toothbrushes like Sonicare and Oral b are a great option. Dr. Aliisha prefers electric toothbrushes that have a rechargable battery and has been happy with both Oral b and Sonicare brushes. There are many other options available, but these are the two brands that Dr. Aliisha is most familiar with and has read the evidence to support their effectiveness.

Another helpful element is a two minute timer to help make sure you are brushing for long enough.

If you have a tendency to push too hard or “scrub” when you are brushing, a pressure sensor is a great feature to help lessen your risk of toothbrush abrasion.

Beyond this there are a plethora of high-tech features out there. If technology motivates you to improve your oral hygiene, go for it! I know some people are motivated by having a toothbrush that looks good- and there are many “fashionable” options out there. Children too are often motivated by having a toothbrush that looks fun.

Who knew a toothbrush could be so intriguing ?

4) Replace your toothbrush (or for electric brushes, the head) every 3 months. In between uses, let the brush air dry (don’t store it while wet in a dark, closed container.)

5) RECYCLE! Dr. Aliisha tries to be very eco-friendly. TerraCycle® and Colgate® have partnered to create a national recycling program for all brands of used or empty oral care products and packaging. Drop off your discarded toothbrushes, toothpaste tubes, etc to Laurel Dental and we will ship them out to be recycled for you! This program even raises money for good causes! Find out more here: www.terracycle.com
