what is the difference between botox and xeomin?
Botox has become so common that often all neuromodulators (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau…) are sometimes referred to as ‘botox.’ Botox is manufactured by Allergan, and Xeomin is manufactured by Mertz. Botox and Xeomin are both neuromodulators composed of botulinum toxin type A, which is therapeutically used to block nerve signals to muscles, causing the muscles to relax. Dr. Aliisha most frequently uses Xeomin when treating oral-facial pain or excessive gingival display (“gummy smile.”)
The main difference between Botox and Xeomin is that Xeomin is purified. The unnecessary proteins are removed leaving just the active therapeutic component. The proposed benefit to this is less desensitization. Over time with repeated injections, the unnecessary proteins found in Botox are associated with a desensitization- meaning the body does not respond as well and the desired outcome is not reached. Another example of desensitization is when people who suffer from allergies get allergy shots to decrease their allergic response.
